Eat MOVE Sleep, Tom Rath (2013)

I recently read the incredible book Eat Move Sleep (Tom Rath, 2013). I would highly recommend this book to you. The premise for the book is “how small choices lead to big changes.” When you make better choices in the moment, it benefits your overall health and well-being. While you can’t change your family history, you can change your family future by making better choices today.

The bottom line is that eating right is not enough; exercise alone is insufficient; and sleeping well, in isolation, is not adequate. When you focus all your energy on just one of these pursuits, it often comes at the expense of another. It is essential to think about all three elements together.

Move: Make inactivity your enemy.

  • In today’s society, we sit far longer than ever before. With the click of a mouse, one can accomplish far more than ever before. However, while this increases efficiency, it comes at the expense of our physical health.
  • Exercise alone is not enough. 11 hours of sitting cannot be offset by one full hour of exercise.
  • Calories continue to burn after a high-intensity workout is done, sometimes for several hours.
  • Work out in the morning, if possible. While working out in the evening is better than not working out at all, you’ll miss the positive benefits. Some studies suggest that a mere 20 minutes of moderate activity will significantly improve your mood for the next 12 hours.
  • Align yourself. Take turns on which arm you carry something. Change your desk around, including monitor, phone, and peripherals. Include as much variability as you can often, to decrease burdening one side of your body.
  • Your brain works better following exercise. Research shows that exercise creates an immediate benefit for your memory.
  • Exercise a little more than you already do. Start small; some activity is always better than none. The last thing you want to do is set a goal so unrealistic or intimidating that it deters you from doing anything at all. Exercise isn’t just about physical improvement; there are many mental benefits as well.

Eat: Every single bite is a net gain or loss.

  • Forget diets; short term gains will get lost in long term.
  • Study Carbohydrates vs. Proteins; try to achieve better than 5:1 – many snacks are 10:1 or worse.
  • Sugar is a drug; the more you consume, the more you want. Consuming sugar early in the day sets you up for a day-long craving. Avoid “added sugars” when possible. Ideally, look for products containing less than 10g of sugar. Pick one food/drink that you would normally add sweetener, and for one week, try eating/drinking without adding the sweetener.
  • Refined Carbohydrates are another addictive drug (in this case, “refined” does not mean better!) We get enough carbs from fruits, vegetables, and protein. Do everything you can to replace refined carbohydrates with vegetables when you prepare or order a meal. Try to find natural snacks like nuts, carrots, apples, celery, kale chips, or seeds.
  • Don’t let your stomach get too empty; it could easily turn into overeating.
  • Don’t eat too fast; aim for 20 minutes, which is a good, general guideline.
  • Protein can be found in much better sources than just meat: Fruits & Vegetables, Nuts, Seafood
  • Bread is a lot worse than we think.
  • High fat foods decrease your energy and your mood later in the day. Eating poorly will make a bad day even worse. Consider your relationships with others when choosing what to eat.
  • When given a choice, pick the form of food closest to how it was originally grown. Example; dried fruits or juices have 10 times the sugar of the original whole fruit.
  • Most advertising is deceptive. The more claims a product makes, the more you should be skeptical and ask the right questions.
  • Buy “use it or lose it” foods. Foods that do not last for years on a shelf are usually healthier.
  • When eating a big meal, start with the healthiest food first. Doing so will ensure you get the most out of the healthiest options, and possibly leave unhealthy options left-over. Some studies suggest that drinking a glass of water before a meal actually results in weight loss.
  • Your greatest health risks are individual to you (that’s why doctors ask so much about your family history.) Do some research; find out what foods you could eat to decrease your greatest risk.
  • Every bite and drink counts. You don’t get healthier by simply trying to eat better in general. You improve your health on a bite-by-bite basis.

Disney Parks celebrates the 50th anniversary of ‘it’s a small world’

SW logo

March 21, on “Good Morning America,” plans were announced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic “it’s a small world” attraction, which debuted at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.

On April 10, hundreds of voices from the Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disney Resort, Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland will sing the unforgettable theme song of the “happiest cruise that ever sailed the seven seas” in a global sing-along.

“‘it’s a small world’ has inspired hundreds of millions of people through its timeless theme,” said Tom Staggs, chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “Every moment of every day there are Disney Guests enjoying ‘It’s a Small World’ somewhere around the globe. The 50th anniversary of this attraction represents a celebration of the shared optimism, hope and humanity of people throughout the world.”

In addition, SmallWorld50.com launched today as a “global hub” of music and harmony, where Guests and Cast Members are encouraged to record videos of themselves singing the classic song and create virtual “it’s a small world” dolls that can be shared with friends through social media, all benefitting UNICEF. Along with a $150,000 donation on behalf of The Walt Disney Company in honor of the 50th anniversary, the company will also donate $1 for every sing-along video recorded, and another $1 for every virtual doll created on the website, up to $100,000.

Disney began its relationship with UNICEF in 1964 with the debut of “it’s a small world” at the New York World’s Fair. More recently, Disney and UNICEF have worked together to create a brighter tomorrow for thousands of children through programming that helps foster imagination and creativity. UNICEF provides health care and immunizations, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more to children around the world.

To help announce the celebration, Disney Parks released a video featuring people around the world singing, dancing to and playing “It’s a Small World.”Filmed across six continents in more than 25 countries, the video features international “performers” – including bagpipers in Scotland, Bollywood movie actors in India, a firefighter in New York City, and members of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir – to create one worldwide video.

Transformed by the Word of God

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple (Psalm 19:7,ESV)

-article by James MacDonald, 3/10/2014

wiw

God’s Word transforms us. It changes and renovates us. And according to Psalm 19:7, it converts death into life and spiritual ignorance into wisdom.

The word law in “the law of the Lord” translates the Hebrew Torah as the law for life, the rule for living. God’s Word is the absolute norm. His statements are never guesses or suggestions. The Bible is the standard by which every other truth is measured or assessed.

Notice the claim of ownership. Scripture is “the law of the Lord” (emphasis added). God claims clear authorship of His book. Throughout history, people have written and established laws and rules; governments have imposed structure on society. Nations come and nations go, but the Word of God remains—timeless and enduring because it is His.

The verse also describes God’s law as “perfect.” That word perfect literally means all-sided, many-faceted, all-encompassing, and comprehensive. The utter perfection of God’s law is linked to “reviving” (ESV) or “converting the soul” (NKJV). The soul is the inner, immaterial part of you. You are not just primarily a physical person. Part of you is spiritual and will live forever, and that’s the part of you in need of being converted—your soul. God’s Word demonstrates its perfection by making you a new creation.

This transformation is a fascinating, supernatural process, exemplified by “Joe Screwdriver.” This guy invariably appears in churches across North America and is somewhere in the process of life-change. A regular guy who works in his garage, just trying to get by and figure out life, Joe shows up at church—often against his will, at least at first. He begrudgingly attends because he lost a bet with his wife or decided to find out what was going on in her life. But he’s not sure—about any of it.

His body language communicates his resistance. The first week, he sits cross-armed and leans back, observing. Though he is there, he refuses to participate. He projects, I’m not singing. I am flat-out not singing. I may be here, but you can’t make me sing. I’m going to show you I don’t like what’s happening right now.

Yet as much as outer evidence points to the contrary, we begin to see little signs of God at work.

As weeks become months, God’s Word transforms Joe Screwdriver. First, he unfolds his arms. He relaxes. He begins to lean forward. While we watch and pray and wait, we have a front-row view of the conversion process as God softens and changes Joe’s heart.

Just as Psalm 19:7 describes, God’s perfect, powerful law converts an unsaved, unregenerated, uninterested, hardhearted Joe Screwdriver into a new person. His Word spins this man completely around. Joe unfolds his arms and lifts them in praise . . . he unseals his lips and worships the Lord.

God’s Word has the power to transform anyone. He can soften even the hardest heart. The regenerative work in Joe Screwdriver’s life is a process, and it doesn’t end with conversion. God continues to change and sanctify us through His Word.

In what ways can you say, “I’m a different person because of the impact God’s Word has made in my life”? Just as we can trace the effects of Scripture in the lives of others, so we should be able to see the persistent, guiding, transforming work of “the law of the Lord” in our own.

Maleficent coming 05/30/2014

New MaleficentMaleficent /məˈlɛfɪsənt/ is a fictional character and the main antagonist in Walt Disney’s 1959 film Sleeping Beauty. She is the self-proclaimed “Mistress of All Evil” who, after not being invited to a royal christening, curses the infant Princess Aurora to “prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die” before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday. The character is Disney’s adaptation of the wicked fairy godmother from the original French fairy tale.

Maleficent has been called “one of the most menacing villains in the Disney canon”. In Ultimate Disney’s top 30 Disney Villains countdown, Maleficent ranked #1. She also plays a major role as a recurring villain in the Kingdom Hearts series of role-playing games.
